Google Ads or Meta Ads for a Service Business?

Choose an initial advertising test using buyer intent, creative resources, lead quality and unit economics, with a clearly labelled cost example.

Choose the first channel around how your buyer finds the service and what your business can measure. A service with existing search demand and an urgent need may suit a search campaign. A service that needs explanation or visual proof may warrant a creative-led test. Neither platform is automatically cheaper or more profitable.

Start with the buying situation

Write down the problem the customer has immediately before contacting you. “I need a surveyor this week” and “I am considering a career change” imply different timeframes, objections and information needs. The advertising brief should describe that situation before listing campaign types.

Review actual enquiries, sales-call questions and, where available, search-term data. Avoid treating keyword volume as a count of available customers. A relevant query can still come from someone researching rather than buying.

Compare the work each test needs

Decision A search-led test A creative-led test
Offer A clear answer to a specific service need. A reason to pay attention and understand the service.
Assets A relevant landing page and search-intent research. Distinct messages, images or video and a suitable landing experience.
Review Search terms, lead quality and cost per qualified enquiry. Creative response, lead quality and cost per qualified enquiry.
Constraint Demand may be limited in a narrow market. Creative production and follow-up can become the bottleneck.

This is a planning framework, not a full list of either platform’s capabilities. Both can support multiple formats and stages of the buying journey.

Use qualified leads to compare costs

Here is an illustrative example. Campaign A spends $600 and generates 20 enquiries, of which 10 are qualified. Campaign B spends $600 and generates 40 enquiries, of which 8 are qualified. The first costs $60 per qualified lead; the second costs $75. Looking only at raw enquiry cost would reverse the conclusion.

These are invented numbers to explain the calculation, not benchmark results or client performance. A real comparison also needs sales conversion, contribution margin, follow-up speed and a consistent definition of “qualified”.

Agree the test before spending

Define the market, offer, landing page, conversion event, budget limit, review date and success measure. Decide who supplies creative, who answers enquiries and how outcomes return to the report. If the available budget cannot support two useful tests, start with one and document what would justify adding the other.

Do not stop a campaign solely because one day’s result looks poor. Equally, do not keep spending when the form is broken or the enquiries fall outside the service area. Separate implementation problems from an inconclusive commercial test.

What management costs

Pixel Pulse Media’s published rate is $450 for the first month on one platform, then $600 per month, with ad spend separate. An additional platform adds $250 per month. The Google Ads and Meta Ads service pages explain scope and creative responsibilities.

If you already advertise, start with a performance marketing audit to determine what the current evidence supports.
