Google Ads Getting Clicks but No Leads? 9 Checks

Getting Google Ads clicks but no enquiries? Check tracking, search intent, location targeting and landing pages before increasing your budget.

A cursor crosses a green bridge toward a contact symbol, illustrating the path from an ad click to an enquiry.

If Google Ads is getting clicks but no leads, check the enquiry process, measurement and traffic quality before increasing spend. A click confirms that someone opened an ad. It does not establish that the visitor needs your service, can buy it or successfully contacted you.

This checklist is for service businesses generating enquiries through a website, phone or booking tool. Work through it in order and keep a short record of the evidence. The aim is to find the first broken step between a relevant search and a real conversation.

Start with the symptom you can verify

What you observe First place to investigate
Enquiries arrive, but Ads shows none Conversion collection and reporting definitions
Ads shows leads, but the inbox is empty What the conversion counts and whether submissions reach your team
Clicks arrive, but nobody submits Search intent, offer and the mobile enquiry process
Submissions arrive, but few fit Qualification, targeting and the promises in the ad

1. Submit an enquiry as a customer would

Open the actual landing-page URL on a phone. Complete the form with a clearly labelled test record and check the confirmation, email delivery and CRM entry. Test the booking path separately if it uses another domain. A working homepage does not prove that an ad’s destination works.

Check required fields, validation errors, keyboard behaviour and whether a sticky banner covers the submit button. For calls, confirm that the displayed number reaches the correct team during advertised hours. Exclude your test from business reporting.

2. Define what your lead conversion measures

A contact-button click, form start and accepted enquiry are different events. Check the conversion action name, source, trigger and whether it is used for campaign optimisation. A button-click goal can produce a healthy-looking report even when no message arrives.

Reconcile measurement before changing it. Use our Google Ads and GA4 comparison guide if reports disagree, or the duplicate conversion checklist if a single test appears more than once.

3. Read the searches behind the clicks

Review the search terms report and classify visible queries as buying intent, research, jobs, support or irrelevant. Look at the combination of spend and intent. An expensive relevant query needs a different response from a search for a service you do not provide.

Google’s search terms documentation explains that the report shows actual searches and omits some low-volume queries for privacy. Treat the visible rows as useful evidence, not a complete log. Add negatives carefully; an overly broad exclusion can remove potential customers.

4. Check who your location settings can reach

A business serving customers locally may need different targeting from a hotel attracting travellers abroad. Review both the locations selected and the location option in use. Google distinguishes people present in an area from people also showing interest in it; see its location targeting guidance.

Compare enquiry locations with the area you can actually serve. Do not change every account to the same setting without considering the buying journey.

5. Match the page to the ad’s promise

If the ad offers a specific service, the landing page should explain that service immediately. State who it is for, the problem it addresses, what the customer receives and what happens after they enquire. Replace vague claims with verifiable details.

For example, an ad for commercial office cleaning should lead to a page about that service and its coverage area. A general page listing unrelated services makes the visitor do extra work. This is a hypothetical example, not a client result.

6. Ask for enough information to qualify the enquiry

Keep fields that change how you respond, such as service required and project location. Question every additional mandatory field. The shortest possible form is not automatically best: removing a useful qualification question can increase submissions while reducing fit.

Use honest proof, clear contact information and an accurate explanation of the next step. Never invent testimonials or promise a response time your team cannot meet.

7. Break down performance without overreading tiny samples

Compare device, campaign, landing page and traffic source using a date range long enough for your normal sales process. A mobile-only problem may reveal a form defect that disappears in account totals. A handful of clicks with no enquiry cannot establish that a campaign has failed.

Illustrative maths: at an assumed 5% independent click-to-lead probability, the chance of zero leads after 20 clicks is about 36% (0.95 to the power of 20). The assumption is not an industry benchmark; real traffic varies. Use it to understand why small samples are uncertain.

8. Check lead handling as well as lead generation

Review missed calls, delivery failures, duplicate records and time to first response. Record why enquiries were rejected. “Outside service area” points to a different fix from “could not contact” or “needed a different service.” Keep personal details in your CRM rather than an advertising report.

9. Change one meaningful thing and set a review rule

Write down the finding, proposed fix, owner and success measure. Repair a confirmed broken form immediately. For a messaging test, keep the comparison understandable and assess qualified enquiries after sufficient time and spend. Avoid changing targeting, bids, creative and the page together unless a wider rebuild is justified.

Should you increase the budget?

Only after you know the enquiry path works and the traffic is commercially relevant. More budget can buy more visits; it does not repair a broken form or an unclear offer. If the data is too limited, agree an affordable test budget and a decision point.
